Produced between 1948 and 1956, the Cessna 170 is a light, single-engine, general aviation aircraft. The capacity of the 170 is one crew member and three passengers. The empty weight is 1205 lb (547 kg) and the loaded weight is 2200 lb (998 kg). Cruise speed is 105 knots (121 mph, 195 km/h), stall speed is 43 knots (49 mph, 79 km/h), and maximum speed is 124 knots (143 mph, 230 km/h).
The original Cessna Model 170 with a metal fuselage and tail and fabric covered wings began sales in late 1948. The earliest 170s were four-seat versions of the Cessna 140 with a more powerful 145 hp Continental O-300 engine and larger fuel tanks. The 170 was constructed of metal with fabric covered wings supported by a "V" strut like the 140. The Cessna 170A developed in 1949 was an all-metal aircraft with zero-dihedral wings, and a single strut replacing the "V" strut of the 170.
The Model 305 was a military variant of the Cessna 170 that the United States Air Force, Army, and Marines began using in 1950. The 305 was designated the L-19 and later O-1 Bird Dog by the military. These aircraft were used a forward air control and reconnaissance aircraft.
The Cessna 170B was introduced in 1952. The 170B featured a new wing incorporating the dihedral similar to the 305. The 170B was equipped with very effective modified-Fowler wing flaps which deflect up to 40 degrees and a wing design that lives on in the Cessna light singles of today. The aircraft also included a new tailplane, larger rear windows, and a revised tailwheel.
Equipped with conventional landing gear the 170 is more challenging to land than tricycle landing gear. The Cessna 172, which was essentially a nosewheel-equipped 170B with a square fine, was introduced in 1956. Production of the 170 was halted soon after the 172 became available. Cessna built 5174 Cessna 170s and over 2000 are still in service today.
