Cessna built the L19/O-2 has a replacement for the Cessna L-19/O-1 Bird Dog. The Cessna O-2 Skymaster is a military version of the Cessna 337. The aircraft has the capacity for two crew members.
532 Cessna O-2s were built. Variant models include the O-2A and O-2B. The O-2A was designed for use in forward air control missions. The aircraft features ordnance points underneath the wings to hold rockets, gun pods, or flares. The O-2B was designed for psychological warfare. This aircraft features loudspeakers and a leaflet dispenser, but carried not weapons.
The Cessna 337 was equipped the rear engine between them, twin booms extend aft of the wings to the vertical stabilizers. Mounted between and connecting the two booms, the horizontal stabilizer is aft of the pusher propeller. Combined tractor and pusher engines produce centerline thrust. The 337 will not yaw into the dead engine if one engine fails. This is due to the aircraft's engine configuration. Engine failure on takeoff will also not produce yaw from the runway direction. The 337 requires a multi-engine rating. However, many countries issue a special "centerline thrust rating" for Skymaster and other similar aircraft. The airplane produced a unique sound due to the combination sound of its rear propeller slicing through turbulent air from the front prop and over the airframe, while its nose propeller addressed undisturbed air.
