Cessna 337 Series Aircraft Information
Built in a push-pull configuration, the Cessna Skymaster is a United States twin-engined civil utility aircraft. The Cessna 337 has the capacity for one crew member and five passengers. The empty weight is 2655 lb (1204 kg) and the maximum takeoff weight is 4400 lb (2000 kg). The maximum speed is 174 knots (200 mph, 320 km/h) and the rate of climb is 1200 ft/min (6.1 m/s). The Skymaster's engines are mounted in the nose and rear of its pod-style fuselage.
2993 aircraft were produced from 1963 to 1982. Variant Cessna models include the 327 Baby Skymaster, 336 Skymaster, Model 337 Super Skymaster, 337A Super Skymaster, 337B Super Skymaster, T337 Turbo Super Skymaster, 337C Super Skymaster, 337D Super Skymaster, 337E Super Skymaster, 337F Super Skymaster, 337G Super Skymaster, P337 Super Skymaster, 337H Super Skymaster, P337H Pressurized Skymaster, 337M, O-2A, O-2B, O-2TT, Summit Sentry O2-337, Lynx, and T337G. With the rear engine between them, twin booms extend aft of the wings to the vertical stabilizers. Mounted between and connecting the two booms, the horizontal stabilizer is aft of the pusher propeller. Combined tractor and pusher engines produce centerline thrust.
The 337 Super Skymaster was introduced in 1965. The 337 had retractable landing gear and a dorsal air scoop for the rear engine. A turbocharged variant (T337) was introduced in 1966 and a pressurized variant (P337G) was introduced in 1973. Cessna produced civil and military variants of the 337. Reims in France also built several models of the aircraft.
The Cessna 337 will not yaw into the dead engine if one engine fails. This is due to the aircraft's engine configuration. Engine failure on takeoff will also not produce yaw from the runway direction. The 337 requires a multi-engine rating. However, many countries issue a special "centerline thrust rating" for Skymaster and other similar aircraft. The airplane produced a unique sound due to the combination sound of its rear propeller slicing through turbulent air from the front prop and over the airframe, while its nose propeller addressed undisturbed air.
