Piper Super Cub Series Aircraft Information
Developed form the Piper PA-11, the Piper PA-18 Super Cub is a two-seat, single-engine monoplane. The capacity of the Super Cub is one crew member and one passenger. The empty weight is 930 lb (422 kg) and the maximum takeoff weight is 1750 lb (794 kg). Cruise speed is 100 knots (115 mph, 185 km/h), stall speed is 38 knots (43 mph, 69 km/h), and the Super Cub should never exceed a speed of 132 knots (153 mph, 246 km/h).
The Piper PA-18 Super Cub was produced from 1949 to 1983 and from 1988 to 1994. Over 9000 aircraft were manufactured during this time. Variant models of the Super Cub in the PA-18 Super Cub, PA-18-105 Super Cub, PA-18-105 Special, PA-18-125 Super Cub, PA-18-135 Super Cub, PA-18-150 Super Cub, PA-18-180 Super Cub, PA-18A, PA-18S, PA-18AS, and PA-19 Super Cub. Military designations include the L-18C Super Cub, YL-21 Super Cub, L-21A Super Cub, L-21B Super Cub, TL-21A, and U-7A Super Cub. Super Cubs are usually found in roles such as bush flying, banner and glider towing.
The design of the PA-18 Super Cub was based on the design of earlier designs. However, the addition of an electrical system, flaps (3 notches), and a more powerful 150 horsepower engine make it a very different flying experience. The standard Super Cub is fitted with a 150 horsepower Lycoming engine, but some are equipped with a 180 horsepower engine. The Super Cub's high-lift wing and powerful engine make it a prime candidate for conversion to a floatplane or skiplane. The PA-18A an agricultural version was produced for applying dry chemical or liquid spray.
Super Cubs are renowned for their ability to take off and land in very short distances. The first Super Cubs had flaps, dual fuel tanks, and 108 horsepower Lycoming O-235 engine. Gross weight was 1500 lb. These Cubs were known for takeoff in about 400 feet and landing in about 300 feet. A 135 horsepower O-290 Lycoming powered Cub would takeoff in about 200 feet and landing in 300-400 feet. The use of a 150-160 horsepower Lycoming O-320 and an increased allowable gross weight of 1750 lb retained the capability of a 200 feet takeoff.
