Piper Tomahawk Aircraft Information

A two-seat, fixed tricycle landing gear general aviation airplane, the Piper PA-38 Tomahawk was originally designed for flight training, touring, and personal use. The Tomahawk has the capacity for two crew members. The empty weight is 1128 lb (512 kg) and the maximum takeoff weight is 1670 lb (757 kg). Cruise speed is 100 knots (115 mph, 185 km/h), stall speed is 49 knots (56.5 mph, 91 km/h), and maximum speed is 109 knots (126 mph, 202 km/h). The rate of climb is 718 ft/min (3.65 m/s).

The airplane was Piper's attempt to create an affordable two-place trainer. Piper surveyed flight instructors and found they wanted a more spinnable aircraft for training purposes. Equipped with the NASA GA(W)-1 Whitcomb airfoil the Tomahawk addresses this requirement by making specific pilot input necessary in recovering from spins. The flight controls of the aircraft mimic those of a much heavier aircraft. Therefore, student pilots that learn to fly in the Tomahawk transition more successfully to a larger aircraft.

In production from 1978 to 1982, 2484 Tomahawk aircraft were built. Models built in 1981 and 1982 were known as the Tomahawk II. The Tomahawk II featured improved cabin heating and windshield defroster performance; improved engine thrust vector; an improved elevator trim system; better cockpit soundproofing; 100% airframe zirconium anti-corrosion treatment; larger 6" wheels and tires for greater propeller ground clearance and improved performance on grass and dirt runways. The aircraft is a widely used primary trainer, but it is also an effective budget cross-country aircraft for two people with its spacious and comfortable cabin.
