The North American T-28 Trojan is a military trainer aircraft that is used by the US Navy and the US Air Force. It has also been used successfully in Counter-Insurgency (COIN) missions during the Vietnam War. The aircraft has tandem seating and is powered by a single engine.
Following its success with the US Air Force, the US Navy and Marine Corps started using the North American T-28 as well. It was also used in the 1960s by the CIA in the then Belgian Congo.
The variations of the T-28 include the following: XT-28 (prototype), North American T28A (US Air Force model with a Wright R-1300-7 engine), North American T28B (US Navy model with a Wright R-1820-9 engine), North American T28C (US Navy T-28B with shortened propeller blades and a tailhook), T-28D Nomad (T-28As converted for use in the COIN role, powered by a Wright R-1820-9 engine), AT-28D (US Air Force attack trainer, T-28Ds), YAT-28E (converted with turboprop engines for COIN use), Fennec (Ex T-28As refurbished by Sud-Aviation in France), T-28R-1 Nomair (Ex t-28s refurbished for the Brazilian Navy), T-28R-2 (Ex T-28s converted for civilian use), Nomad Mark I (refurbished by PacAero with a Wright R-1820-56S engine), and the Nomad Mark II (refurbished by PacAero for civilian use with a Wright R-1820-76A engine).
