North American P-51 Aircraft Information

The North American P-51 Mustang is the result of a direct request from the British Purchasing Commission to North American Aviation for a single seat, long-range fighter aircraft. First production models were used by the Royal Air Force for tactical reconnaissance and fighter-bombers during WWII. Early models used a low-altitude Allison V-1710 engine. Out of the 16,766 produced, the P-51D (the definitive model) made up 16,134 of the final number. The aircraft has an empty weight of 7,635 lbs (3,465 kg) and a maximum takeoff weight of 12,100 lbs (5,490 kg). The cruise speed is 362 mph (580 km/h), the stall speed is 100 mph (160 km/h) and the maximum speed is 437 mph (703 km/h). The P-51D uses a Packard V-1650-7 liquid cooled supercharged V-12 engine.

During the design phase the North American P-51 was called the NA-73X. The initial design followed conventional practices of the time but featured two new concepts. The first was a laminar flow airfoil wing design that had very low drag at very high speeds. The second feature was a new radiator design that utilized the heated air exiting the radiator for a form of jet thrust called the Meredith Effect. To save weight, the semi-monocoque fuselage was made completely out of aluminum. After WWII, the P-51 was kept on service until being moved to secondary placement as newer models were released.
