Bellanca Viking Series Aircraft Information
Manufactured in the USA, the Bellanca Viking and Super Viking are a series of four seat, single engine, retractable landing gear, high performance aircraft. The capacity of the Viking is for one crew member and three passengers. Empty weight is 2185 lb (994 kg) and gross weight is 3325 lb (1512 kg). The aircraft has a cruise speed of 205 mph (330 km/h) and a rate of climb of 1210 ft/min (5.9 m/s).
Most of the Viking production occurred between 1968 and 1975 with 1356 total aircraft produced. Variant models of the Bellanca Viking include the 17-30 Viking 300, 17-31 Viking 300, 17-31TC Viking 300, 17-30A Super Viking 300A, 17-31A Super Viking 300A, 17-31ATC Super Viking 300A, Turbo Super Viking and Downer 260. In 1967, the first 17-30 Viking appeared and was powered by a 300 hp Continental IO-520K engine. The 17-31 or turbocharged 17-31TC was introduced in 1969 and powered by a 290 hp Lycoming IO-540 engine.
The Bellanca Viking's fuselage is constructed from tubular steel over-laid with fabric. The wings are constructed from spruce with a plywood skin. Based in Minnesota, Bellanca employed skilled craftsmen to manufacture the wing from spruce. The aircraft was named the "Viking" in respect to the many Scandinavians of the area.
Electric flaps were introduced in 1968 when the original hydraulic gear and flap actuation system was redesigned. The FAA issued the Type Certificate A18CE in 1969, and the aircraft built under that design were designated the "A" series "Super Vikings". Modifications over the years to new A series Vikings were an increased gross weight of 3325 lbs; the complex fuel systems was simplified to a left, right, and auxiliary system; and redesigned engine mount that allowed for a fully enclosed nosewheel. This redesign made the use of cowl flaps necessary for the first time on the Viking. However, this resulted in a 12 mph increase.
A group of six Bellanca enthusiasts purchased the company from the state of Minnesota in 2002. They established Alexandria Aircraft Co LLC. The company provides technical support and parts to owners. They also provide A&Ps in the field.
