The Bell 407 is designed after the Bell 206L LongRanger. It is a single engine, four blade, civil utility aircraft. The helicopter uses a four blade rotor that was developed originally for the US Army's OH-58D Kiowa Warrior. General uses for the aircraft include use as an air ambulance, law enforcement, electronic news gathering, corporate and offshore transfer, and movie making. It seats four passengers and two crew members. The empty weight of the original model is 2,668 lbs (1,210 kg) and the maximum takeoff weight is 6,000 lbs (2,722 kg). The cruise speed is 133 kts (152 mph, 246 km/h) and the maximum speed is 140 kts (260 km/h).
Bell began the design for the 407 series to replace the 206 series. The 407 uses blades and hubs that are composite construction and have no life limits. As a result they are more comfortable and have a better performance. The fuselage is wider creating more cabin space and allowing for larger main cabin windows. The 407 also uses a more powerful Rolls Royce 250-C47 turboshaft engine increasing the takeoff weight from previous variants and improves the performance of the craft in higher altitudes and hotter temperatures.
Variations of the 407 include the ARH-70, the Bell 417 (never produced), the Bell 407 Light Observation Helicopter, Eagle 407 HP, MQ-8C Fire-X, the Bell 407 AH, and the Bell 427.
