The Beechcraft Travel Air was designed to fill the gap between the single-engine Model 35 Bonanza and the much larger Model 50 Twin Bonanza. The aircraft was a twin-engine development of the Bonanza. The Travel Air has the capacity for one crew member and four passengers. The empty weight is 2555 lb (1159 kg) and the maximum takeoff weight is 4200 lb (1905 kg). Cruise speed is 170 knots (195 mph, 314 km/h), stall speed is 61 knots (70 mph, 113 km/h), and maximum speed is 183 knots (210 mph, 338 km/h). The rate of climb is 1250 ft/min (6.3 m/s).
Manufactured from 1958 to 1968, variant models include the Model 95 Travel Air, Model B95/B95A, Model D95A Travel Air, and Model E95. The Travel Air featured the fuselage of the G35 Bonanza and the tail control surfaces of the T-34 Mentor. The aircraft was initially powered by 180 hp Lycoming O-360 engines and later models received a fuel injected version of this engine. Tail control surfaces were replaced with a swept design which resembled the Debonair. This aircraft was larger to handle engine-out situations and was renamed the Baron.
