Beechcraft Beech 18 Series Aircraft Information

The twin-engined, low-wing, 6 to 11 seat, conventional-gear Beechcraft Model 18 or "Twin Beech" was manufactured by the Beech Aircraft Corporation. The Model 18 saw military service during and after World War II in a number of versions for the United States Army Air Forces and the United States Navy. The Twin Beech has the capacity for two pilots and six passengers. The empty weight is 6175 lb (2800 kg) and the maximum takeoff weight is 8727 lb (3959 kg). The maximum speed is 195 knots (225 mph, 360 km/h) and the rate of climb is 1850 ft/min (9.4 m/s).

Produced from 1937 to 1970, the Beech 18 is the most modified U.S.-certified aircraft design, with over 200 FAA approved Supplemental Type Certificates on record for the aircraft. The airplane has many uses including carrying passengers, aerial spraying, aerial firefighting, skydiving, freight, skywriting and banner towing to name a few. Variant models include the 18A, S18A, 18B, S18B, 18D, S18D, A18D, SA18D, A18A, SA18A, 18R, 18S, B18S, C18S, D18S, D18C, E18S, E18S-9700, G18S, G18S-9150, H18, Beechcraft C-45 Series, C-45, C45 Expeditor and several military versions.

In the late 1930s, the Beechcraft Model 18 design was conventional for the time, including twin radial engines, all-metal semi-monocoque construction with fabric covered control surfaces and "taildragger" undercarriage, while less common were the twin tail fins. The early production aircraft were powered by two 330 hp Jacobs L-6s or 350 hp Wright R-760Es. The Model 18 has used a variety of engines and had a number of airframe modifications to increase gross weight and speed.

In 1955 the Model E18S featured a fuselage that was extended 6 inches higher for more headroom in the passenger cabin. All later 18s featured this taller fuselage. Some earlier models have also been modified to this larger fuselage. In 1963, the H18 featured optional tricycle undercarriage. Production of the Beech 18 ceased in 1970. Over the years, 32 variations of the basic design have flown, over 200 modification kits were developed, and almost 8000 aircraft were built.
