The Garmin GI-106B is an updated version of the GI-106A. Like the GI-106A, the GI-106B is a rebranded version of the Mid-Continent MD200. (In this case, it's the MD200-700 series instead of the -300 series.)
The most noticeable difference between the GI-106A and the GI-106B is the needles. On most Indicators, including the GI-106A, the needles are always visible. If a needle is not being driven by a valid signal, a flag is displayed to warn the pilot not to follow it. The GI-106B does not use warning flags. Instead, a needle which is not being driven by a valid signal is simply stowed out of sight. There is no possibility of a pilot following invalid guidance if the needle cannot be seen.
Additionally, all the lighting in the GI-106B has been updated to LED. This will greatly lengthen the service life, and reduce susceptibility to vibration.
The GI-106B is a direct replacement for both the GI-102A and GI-106A. In the "A" generation, Garmin offered both a Glideslope (GI-106A) and non-Glideslope (GI-102A) version. They do not offer a non-Glideslope version in the "B" generation. The GI-106B can certainly function as a non-Glideslope Indicator (with the Glideslope needle hidden), but it is admittedly more expensive than a non-Glideslope version would have been if offered.
The Garmin GI-106B is designed to be compatible with the following GPS and NAV avionics:
